Reading Medieval East Anglia. The Literature of Norwich’s Medieval Jewish Community

Description

This is the second of a sequence of three day schools which will provide an introduction to literature from medieval Norfolk and Suffolk. No experience of the subject is necessary and all texts will be in modern English translation. You are welcome to attend any or all of the series. However, please register for each of the day schools separately. In the 12th and 13th Centuries East Anglia had numerous large and flourishing Jewish Communities. Norwich was the home to the author of the only Hebrew poetry to survive from the period: Meir of Norwich. After and illustrated talk on the history of the Jewish Community in medieval East Anglia, locating Meir in his historical and cultural context, we will read examples of his poetry from the 2013 modern English translation.
